According to cemetery officials, each year around 2000 individual graves are exhumed as a result of overdue cemetery fees. According to regulations, six years after the burial, relatives must pay 180 Quetzales –around US$24- to renew the grave permit for another 4-year period. If payment is not received, cemetery workers destroy the individual graves, and dump the skeletons into mass graves.
