In February 2004, a violent rebellion that included clashes between government and rebel forces, large-scale demonstrations, and massive lootings, culminated in the president’s removal from office. Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a former priest and iconic leader of the dispossessed in Haiti, was flown out of the country in a CIA airplane on February 28th. Up until now, he continues to live in exile in South Africa.
